Malcolm Crowthers

The joint passions of music and photography have, from an early age been central to Malcolm’s career. He was first a librettist, then a music critic for the Daily Telegraph and in 1982 he became a full-time photographer specializing in the full range of performing arts.

His portraits of world famous musicians and composers are recognised internationally and include Aaron Copland, Michael Tippett, John Taverner, Arvo Part, Witold Lutoslawski, Olivier Messiaen and Toru Takemitsu as well as a wider range of individuals involved across the creative arts sector including David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Derek Jarman, Vanessa Redgrave, Ian McKellen, Norma Major and Sting.

Malcolm’s photographs have been used to illustrate articles on music and the performing arts across all media since the 1980s and his images of musicians were a regular feature of the BBC’s Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and reproduced extensively in the annual Proms Guide and programmes.

His work has also formed part of several exhibitions including those held at the Royal Academy of Arts (“Henry Moore retrospective”), Barbican Centre ("Stockhausen: Music & Machines"), Wigmore Hall, London Festival Hall and Westminster Abbey.
